Chelsea confirm $82M move for German starlet After a long negotiation, Chelsea have finally nailed the signing they wanted. The Blues have confirmed that 21-year-old German international Kai Havertz will leave Bayer Leverkusen to join Chelsea after putting pen to paper to a five-year deal. Sources close to the negotiation state that Chelsea and the German outfit agreed the transfer for a $82M fee, although add-ons could take the deal up to over $100M. Havertz contributed to 27 of Bayer Leverkusen’s goals last season, and that was a key factor for Chelsea to push as hard as they did for the footballer.
The former Leverkusen star shared his excitement for completing the deal. “I am very happy and proud to be here, For me it is a dream come true to play in a big club like Chelsea and I can’t wait to meet all the players and the trainers. Yeah, I am very happy to be here!” Havertz told the team’s website.
Havertz was subsequently praised by Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia after the deal was signed. “Kai is one of the best players of his age in world football, so we are very happy that his future lies at Chelsea. He has proven pedigree in one of the best leagues in Europe, he plays for the German national side and he is an exciting, dynamic talent. We are delighted to be able to add his versatility and quality to the squad before the season begins,” Chelsea’s director stated.
Havertz will join Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Thiago Silva, and Ben Chilwell as Chelsea’s new signings for the 2020-21 season, which will surely make the Blues a top contender for the Premier League title.
